Evie’s Story

Evie Poolman was a fit and healthy 9-year-old when she was diagnosed with a DMG brain tumour (DIPG is a form of DMG) on 29th December 2020. Over the following months, Evie bravely underwent 4 brain operations, stints in intensive care and 6 weeks of radiation… with no complaints, but like a true warrior, Evie doubled down, determined to fight her cancer.

Sadly, during a family holiday shortly after radiation, Evie started to show signs of the disease. The MRI that followed brought with it the devastating news that Evie’s cancer had spread throughout her brain – Evie did not have long left.
Evie died on June 17th, 2021, less than 6 months after diagnosis. Evie was just 9 years old. She never got the chance to reach her full potential, to live out her dreams of being a daycare teacher, of being a mother and growing old with her sisters.

Tragically, this is the same story for other children diagnosed with DMG / DIPG tumours like Evie’s. Her parents, Charles and Bridget, were horrified to learn the stats that these children and families face and have joined the fight with other parents of warriors to shine a light on this, to raise awareness, raise funds and try to find a cure for this debilitating disease so no other child or family must face the prognosis that Evie did.
